Chocolate a la Taza
One of the many pleasures throughout Spain is their hot chocolate or Chocolate de la Taza. This thick and delicious beverage is very popular after “clubbing” at the local discos. (around 4:00a.m.) After hour bars serve this concoction along with Churros to counteract other beverage excesses. However, if staying up past 2 a.m. would be a miracle, then it is perfectly acceptable to have it at a normal morning hour for breakfast. At Comida España, we carry one of the oldest and very popular Chocolate a la Taza: Torras. This company was founded in 1890 in the northeast part of Spain. Don’t expect this to be the swiss-type hot chocolate with dehydrated marshmallows. It is very thick, not too sweet, with a rich cocoa flavor. This is best consumed with sweet baked goods. Again, Spain serves this with Churros but donuts or biscotti work well also. It is also not instant. It needs a little bit of time and love when making it. Special: Get 5 bags for $9. Each bag gives a generous 4 servings per bag. |

Off the beaten path: Rias Baixas
Yet another area that we should have spent a lot longer but didn’t! This region of Galacia is on the eastern coast of Spain. There are four rias or inlets in this location. The scenery is mixed with rugged coastlines, sheltered coves, doted with fishing villages. It is easy accessed from Santiago de Compostela. There is a coastal road that starts at the village of Muros and ends at Pontevedra. The guide books gives about a day to do a tour but based on past experience, everything takes a lot longer that anticipated so make it at least a two day trip. Also, this is a very rainy area so plan your trip accordingly.
