This summer, we are going to the northwestern part of Spain. Galicia is where all of our seafood conservas come from. This area is very unique compared to the rest of Spain. It has a rugged western coastline consisting of cliffs as well as inlets. Best of all, it won’t be +100 degrees!
The food is very different there also. Because of its fishing industry, a lot of the foundations of the local dishes are seafood or fish. A few of the dishes are: Vieras de Santiago (Scallops in the shell), Empanadas, which many think of as a Latin American dish, however it originated here in Galicia; and Lacón con grelos (the Galician national dish of cured pork shoulder with turnip tops and sausage). The further east you go, cheese and wine become more and more prevalent. |
